The Procyon-Sirius Dyad: Some questions answered

We start this series with an exploration of Procyon and Sirius, the ‘dog’ stars, the latter having been published in the August 2025 Timelords.

Rather than accounting for the ideals of the stars, this column’s format is akin to a Questions and Answers, inspired by my client work with those who have wanted to better understand the meaning of the stars in their spiritual practise.

Procyon and Sirius

Firstly, what is the purpose of this dyad?

In short, Procyon teaches the sOul how to serve while Sirius teaches the sOul what it is serving.

How do Procyon and Sirius complement and/or create dissonance with each other, and what is the purpose of their connection?

Despite the fact that Procyon is ‘ahead’ of Sirius by zodiacal degree, as seen from the Northern Hemisphere and because of the tilt of the Earth’s axis, Procyon’s northerly declination allows it to rise before Sirius.

Her light dimmer and in every culture her mythology secondary to that of the Dog Star, Procyon is the Lesser Hound, running ahead and announcing the presence of the Greater Hound. She is the forerunner, the herald, the one who prepares the ground for a brilliance she herself cannot match. The Temple at Delos oriented its priests to watch her rise because her appearance meant Sirius was a week away.

Procyon cultivates in you the capacity to serve a light greater than yourself, a service that is without recognition. When your ego absorbs Procyon's frequency, you are schooled in faithful preparation, learning through the Carpenter's attention to detail and the steersman's steady hand to do the work that lays the Way for someone to build upon what you have created.

Encouraging the soul along a humble path, when you reach Sirius, you are already oriented away from your own agency and desire, which makes the presence of Sirius easier to bare, since the Scorcher’s light eviscerates all remaining semblances of ‘I’, as you are encouraged to each beyond the notion of ‘becoming someone’. Through Procyon's preparation, you have already learnt how to yield.

No dissonance exists between them. Theirs is an initiatory arc, with Procyon preparing the ground and Sirius revealing the Path from understanding into being.

Both stars carry the dog-consciousness, and yet the dog in Sirius is the psychopomp, the guardian at the threshold of death's veil, while the dog in Procyon is the herald, the forerunner, the faithful announcer. What does it mean that the sOul must pass through the herald's consciousness before it can stand in the presence of the psychopomp's?

The herald's dog runs ahead whereas the psychopomp's dog stands motionless at the threshold. Two entirely different qualities of canine consciousness, the distinction between them is reflected in the full weight of what the initiatory arc between Procyon and Sirius actually demands of the sOul.

Procyon's dog is in motion, faithful, forward-moving, oriented always toward the arrival of something greater than itself, finding its purpose in the running rather than in the standing, in the announcement rather than the judgment. It is the dog of devotion and momentum, of the open heart extended outward in Cardinal Water's instinctive reaching, of loyalty expressed through faithful service to a direction rather than to a threshold.

The psychopomp's dog does something altogether more demanding: it stands still and it weighs. It distinguishes the living from the dead with an absolute and instinctive discernment that admits no performance and accepts no argument. To stand in its presence is to be seen at the frequency you actually carry rather than the frequency you have convinced yourself to carry.

What this teaches us is that your sOul must first pass through the herald's faithful, trusting and loyal consciousness because the herald's running is the only training adequate to engage wholly and consciously the psychopomp's stillness. To stand without flinching in the presence of a discernment that sees everything, requires a sOul that has already learned to find its sufficiency in something other than the story it tells about itself.

If Procyon teaches the sOul to find its sufficiency in being eclipsed, and Sirius burns through the ego's final claim to sovereignty, what remains?

What remains is the conduit, cleared of every obstruction the ego erected in its long and largely sincere attempt to be the source of its own light. This is the sOul in its functional truth.

The Egyptians knew this and encoded it into stone. The seventy days of Sirian invisibility were the days the conduit was dark, the gateway closed. When Sirius rose again in the eastern sky, what returned was the confirmation that the conduit was open, that the hidden one had come back through the gateway, that the deeper light was flowing again into the field of earthly life and the work of the civilisation could continue.

How does the heliacal rising of Procyon map onto the interior experience of initiation?

The week between Procyon's and Sirius’ heliacal rising is the period in which the herald does everything she can do for the sOul being held in preparatory darkness, a microcosm of the 70 days hiatus that the Egyptians held whilst Sirius was invisible.

Your sOul is being asked to hold loyal and steady through the period of uncertainty to something it cannot yet receive. The ego, even a genuinely devoted ego, finds this interval unbearable, because it has completed its preparation and received nothing yet in return.

That week asks of the sOul to resist temptation, and to invoke that simplest, yet most difficult, of all the dog-virtues: to wait, faithfully, in the full knowledge that what is coming cannot be rushed and can only be received by a sOul remained in stasis long enough for the deeper light to find it there.

In the Behenian tradition, Procyon is assigned rulership of the left eye - the eye of intuitive perception and of precognitive knowing. What is the relationship between that quality of perception and the burning Sirius accomplishes?

As previously mentioned, Procyon heliacal appearance in the eastern morn sky-ocean rise is an announcement of what is to follow. Just as the faculty of intuitive knowing orients your psyche towards the greater light before that light is anywhere near close enough to be seen directly, it is Procyon's gift and her most significant limitation. Why? Akin to oracular wisdom and the frustration felt by those seeking to prepare for, manage and control outcome, the left eye, however pellucid its perception, perceives the approach, reading the frequency of what is to come before that frequency has fully entered the field of experience. Subject to free will, the frequency is modulated and filtered through countless dense layers, altering the physical manifestation, but not the essence. So Procyon’s rising helps you to prepare for the fact that you have to let go some egoic attachments, but as to what specifically, the Sirian burning precedes and exceeds knowing entirely!

How does the deeper light burn off the ego and for what purpose?

Sirian light burns through what the egO claims to own. The dog mythologies carry this truth: the psychopomp tracks, flushes out, and distinguishes, the living told from the dead by what can sustain itself under that quality of light.

What cannot sustain itself is the egO that has stopped conducting and started hoarding, mistaking the light it carries for a light it generated. Sirian light passes through what the dog-virtues, loyalty, simplicity, devotion, joy, faithfulness that expects nothing in return, have rendered translucent, and scorches what remains too dense to transmit.

The burning is intelligent. It knows exactly what it is looking for. Just as Sirius transmits charged particles to our Sun, and through the Sun into embodied life, the egO, functioning as it is designed to function, steps that frequency down into forms that can work within matter. This process was encoded in the pyramids, constructs erected to receive Sirian frequency directly, their stone doing externally what the dog-virtues do inwardly: clearing the channel so the deeper current can move through without being seized and claimed.

What survives the burning is a sOul restored to its proper function, a conscious conduit of a light it did generate and cannot own.

The Dogon tradition knew Sirius as a binary system before telescopes confirmed it. What does the relationship between Sirius A and Sirius B carry spiritually?

Perhaps the Dogon are the physical incarnation of Procyon, as their deep knowledge of the Sirian star system, long before modernity saw, through a powerful telescope, the binary nature of that system. Accessing knowledge through means other than reductive, analytics, akin to looking at the world through the lens of the left eye, the Dogon drew images of Sirius A and B centuries before the Egyptians built their pyramids and calendars around the Scorcher.

Though appearing as a brilliant twinkling light in our watery skies, its binary dance generating the field we experience as Sirian light, this points towards the possibility that the Divine Masculine light Sirius transmits is itself the product of a polarity, a relationship between a visible and an invisible principle, the blazing A and the dense, collapsed B orbiting each other. The Sun behind the Sun may itself have a Sun behind it, a darkness at the heart of the light, a collapsed density around which even Sirian brilliance rotates.

This means that the Divine Masculine light Sirius transmits to us is actually generated by two bodies, one visible, one invisible. The light we see is not a single source but a relationship between them. This means that the Yang transmission we experience as the Sun behind the Sun is held in orbit by something darker, denser, and more fundamental than the light itself – a deeper Yin heart. The blazing is not the source but it circles the source and the Sun behind the Sun has lOve at its centre.

It is fascinating to note that the Divine Masculine, in every tradition, has never been self-generating. It requires a Feminine principle to have meaning, direction, and purpose. Yang without Yin is force without orientation. If the burning Sirius accomplishes in the sOul is Yang, and that Yang transmission rotates around an invisible Feminine centre, then the egO cannot be burned away by force alone. The burning is oriented by lOve.

What holds Sirian light in its orbit, what gives the transmission its direction and its purpose, is a Feminine principle so withdrawn from visibility that humanity has largely forgotten it exists within the Sirian system at all. And that forgetting may be the root of the egO's deepest error: not merely mistaking itself for the source of its own light, but mistaking the blazing transmission for the whole of what Sirius is. Ancient societies were oriented toward the fire and missed the darkness at the heart of it, the collapsed Feminine centre around which the fire rotates, the lOve that gives the burning its meaning.

The recovery of that invisible centre, recognises that the Divine Masculine transmission is but one path, rather than it being THE destination!

How does the 49.98 year orbital cycle, so close to Chiron's sidereal return, connect the Sirian current to the centauric arc of initiation?

The Chiron sidereal return and the Sirian binary orbital cycle share the same rhythm.

Chiron holds open the threshold between what the egO knows of itself and what it has yet to assimilate, his agency somatic, concerned with the translation of vast unlanded frequency into something the body can recognise, feel, and metabolise through tone, rhythm, and the cadence of its own deep intelligence. He is the Nada Brahma made incarnate, the principle through which the sOul comes to hear what has always been sounding beneath the surface of a life lived at pace – the illumination of the scripts and patterns that are part of your ancestral legacy.

The return occurs at fifty and brings into conscious contact the epigenetic scripts and patterns that were set aside as your psyche consolidated itself around what it needed to be in order to function within the world. That consolidation has, by fifty, run its course. Those subtle rhythms surface in more tangible ways now that the egO structures built for vocation, relationship and identity, are loosening, as youthful vigour, biological gravity and lustful ambition cedes to the whitening of the hairline, the softening of the muscle tone, the wisdom of experience and the staring mortality straight in the face. Those inherited patterns are more overt, as time reflective qualities rise large in a life that has less ahead than behind and the awareness of resolution and healing presses down hard in the lives of those who didn’t take their healing seriously when younger. As Chiron returns, your sOul is asked to reckon with the invisible rhythms that have encouraged you to dance to a deeper beat.

The Sirian binary orbital period shares the same rhythm as the Chiron sidereal return. So at fifty, when Chiron completes his first full circuit, the body's accumulated intelligence insists on being heard as the unlanded frequencies, the unmetabolised experiences and the cadence of everything excluded from the story the egO is rendered audible. Sirius floods through the stillness Chiron's reckoning has opened, a concentrated light that burns away the egO’s protective structures, opening the psyche up in a humbling, deconstructive way, making the dissonance between the ego and the unhealed family ego, clearly heard, thereby accomplish the completion of Procyon's long preparation.

The herald has held her torch through the full fifty years of the first circuit, faithfully running ahead of this greater light, and at fifty the sOul is ready to truly hear the under, or ghost, tones singing silently beneath the main melody. The body, tuned at last to its own deep intelligence, resonant with what it has been carrying and what it has been excluding in equal measure, finds in the Sirian burning the completion of everything the preparation was for: the pulse beneath the pulse blazing through, the tone beneath the tone sounding in full, and what remains a sOul resonant with a frequency it did generate and cannot own, hearing itself at last in consonance with the Sun behind the Sun.
