Third Dialogue

Mercury and Jupiter

Mercury & Jupiter Page 21-32

In this dialogue, we meet Mercury, the cleverest of the gods, the sparkling genius with the twinkle in his eye, alert and ready to respond to any situation, with a speed of thought capable of outsmarting any opponent.

Running a zigzag path through the world of ideas, Mercury is a messenger, facilitating the traffic and exchange of information on all levels of existence. He is enamoured with reason, his mind is a cuckoo’s nest of knowledge on an infinite variety of topics, subjects and themes. Seemingly well-versed in everything, the witty smooth talker can make us feel like we are being pulled in a dozen different directions. He is always ready to trick his way into our plans and schemes, and claim his due in every trade or business deal. He is there to cast riddles upon the mind at the crossing of the ways, demands that we question our assumptions, brings doubt where there was certainty, and play’s the Devil’s advocate, whenever a decision needs to be made.

Here he engages Jupiter, who thunders with revelation, has the greatest appetite for life, and is possessed of the heartiest laughter. He is a god of philosophers, travellers and all who seek to know what lies beyond the horizon of the human senses. His perspective extends beyond the con- tingencies of everyday life, and his far-seeing eye guides us toward the principles of existence that make meaning of life’s rich tapestry, inspiring faith in a higher power. Jupiter comes to instil in us the belief that enlight- enment is real and that the most rewarding journey is in the search for an ultimate truth and that it is possible to transcend the normal by becoming exceptional.

These two characters meet at critical moments of intellectual and spiritual development. We find them overseeing a young child’s first attempts to communicate in language; a student’s first exposure to an influential teacher; at the moment that a person takes holy communion for the first time; as a curious aspirant becoming aware of a guiding light within her own soul, is confronted with doubts, questions and concerns. At this juncture, one’s faith is being called into question, and the boundaries of what can be known are being stretched by Jupiter beyond the narrow confines of reason. Yet at the same time, keen not to be outwitted, Mercury insists that we retain a healthy skepticism, remain sharp in our critical thinking and discernment, and demand to see the evidence for whatever meta-narrative is being lauded as truth.

Narrator:

At the crossroads, Jupiter and Mercury are meeting
Their spirited encounter meaningful, but fleeting.

Jupiter, the Lord of all,
Larger than life, majestic and tall
Broad of stride and vision,
Appears as a pilgrim with ardent ambition.

Mercury is young, bright, fleet of foot,
A gifted trickster who can’t stay put.
Lambent light and thrilling glint,
Leaves feathered marks with his footprint.

Gaia, the earth, receives their impressions
Weaving the threads of their thoughtful expressions.
And with her future balanced on a scale,
She hangs on every word of their tale.

Mercury:

Welcome traveler, welcome to you
How is your good self, how do you do?
Oh, what a treat
At the crossroads we meet
To rest our feet and pleasantly greet.
Here we are where the roads intersect
And if I’m correct
We’re here to connect.
If not, do dare object
And redirect my intellect.
We’re here to bring something new into being
To write in the books new ways of seeing.
It is my leg work you see, and my playful suggestion
To jump straight in and ask you a question.
What is the fire
That feeds your desire
To walk this way
Will I lead you astray?
In this changing season
What is the reason
That awakens your mind
What hope you to find?
Hmm?

Jupiter:

Ah, a riddler I see
Come to question me
An agile spirit, with a restless mind
But toward your sharp enquiries, I am disinclined.
For my answer is fair as the light of day
And your utterances will not lead me astray.
Let me enlighten you boy to the purpose of my travels
Clearer each moment as my journey unravels.
This pilgrim’s path is my right of birth,
It is a weaving together of Heaven and Earth.
I am guided by the stars from the land to the shore,
My soul, in rhythm with the Universal Law.

Mercury:

Hmm, but which path will you choose?
Will you gain, will you lose?
Why walk you this road?
Why carry this load?
Can you hear your heart beat
To the rhythm of your feet?
Will your responses become quicker
As the present moments flicker?
Which direction will you take
As the pathways bifurcate?

Jupiter:

Which road should I take, I hear you ask
But to answer such a question is not my task.
There is only one road, it is the path of the heart
Which no cleverness or wit could ever outsmart.
I know the way, my brilliant young friend,
And from that route I shall not bend,
For I am the preserver of the original trail
And to my mission I shall prevail.
I follow this pathway in faith and in trust,
It satisfies my wanderlust.
And I have no need to re-adjust
For wherever I go, wherever I roam,
This compostela will lead me home.

Mercury:

Wise master,
I see your essence for you are seen
But I have named the places that you have been.
I hear you, teacher, for you are here,
Your vision so far, yet the answers so near.
I know that avenue of which you speak,
The one true path that all pilgrims seek.
I’ve seen many travellers on their spiritual quest,
And I’ve been telling their stories, just to get it off my chest.
My brilliant mind and my intelligence bright
Can grasp all this knowledge and gather insight.
In my metallic shades of blue,
Are flickering ideas old and new.

I hear you talk of a universal tongue
A one-and-all pathway, one song to be sung,
But I speak all foreign languages with ease,
And I will change my quick mind as and when I please.
I hear you speak of divine revelation,
To follow one road to the source of creation,
And I know that seems like an all-time high,
But I can take you somewhere new in the blink of an eye.
For I scribe a place wherever I go,
In betwixt and between the above and below.
And as I look to the left, and I look to the right,
In the brightness of day and the darkness of night,
I find a home in every word I write
In every little thing I say,
In every concept I convey.
For every letter that I sign,
Is marked by the golden seal divine.
Its true revelation I am here to disperse,
To bridge god and man in my innocent verse,
To deliver a message by all understood,
For better or worse, for bad and for good.

Jupiter:

Oh the folly of youth, forever at play,
Whatever I say you’ll divert it your way.
Your mind is swift, but forever young,
Words twist and turn on your quicksilver tongue.
Yet for all your guile and chicanery
You lack the faith to really see
And know the unifying state
In which all paths originate.
There is only one source, one common pulsation
That guides us all to the same destination.
So let me pass, winged Mercury,
And in the spirit of growth, let the travellers be.
For every adventure in a far off land,
They see their consciousness expand,
And it is not the difference that they foresee,
But an ever-evolving unity.
In this expanse of knowing we shall reunite,
Come together for a common rite,
With one single purpose, one great idea,
From the brilliant mind of Lady Sophia.
I see further than you to the final act,
You know me better than to doubt this fact.

Mercury:

I know you, great Zeus, for you are here now;
But once you see me, then I’m gone, oh... wow!
Don’t ask me where, don’t ask me how.
I am the puzzle, never the puzzled,
And this mouth of mine will never be muzzled.
I am in one place and in all places,
I know all minds and know all faces.
For in between the worlds I travel,
Not one but many paths unravel.
My spirit sees beyond the veil
The many colours of the Grail.
This vessel that inspires your pilgrims’ quest?
Sacred cup or treasure chest?

Jupiter:

The Grail is the ultimate quest
And from that search Man shall never rest.
In many forms it shall appear,
Through the eyes of love, through the eyes of fear.
In myriad ways it is portrayed,
Yet its truth is only half-conveyed.
For its cultural styles are mere distractions,
Intermediary interactions,
Fractal forms that imitate,
Enunciate and replicate.
They are mere impressions of an original point,
A singular vision, a pivotal joint
That encompasses it all and removes all doubt,
Revealing to Man what life is truly about.
I devote my journey to what lies ahead,
As the future of humanity hangs by a thread,
As opinions divide us into disparate factions,
With the splintering of trust and violent reactions,
I have faith that in the final scene
A higher power shall intervene.

Mercury:

Oh pilgrim priest, you are so sure,
But what if your faith is premature?
With so many roads and so many trails
The outcome must surely hang in the scales.
One wrong move, one hasty decision,
Could cause a calamitous collision.
The yarn that meshes the fabric of time
Is spun by the trickster through rhythm and rhyme,
One missed stitch could the tapestry cleave,
And so interrupt your cosmic weave.
So tenuous is the thread of fate,
What if God turns up too late?

Jupiter:

To your genius, boy, I am not blind,
For you are a magician of the mind,
A speed of thought that I cannot catch
And as a spinner of yarns you have no match.
But you cannot persuade me through politics,
Or stitch me up with your bag of tricks.
For you fail to consider the Great Architect,
Inarguable through the intellect,
Who draws the geometric scheme
To guide the souls within the Dream.
A grand design can be perceived
At each and every juncture in the universal weave,
Glimpsed through a holographic impression
At every nodal intercession,
Where every part reveals the whole,
Resolving the tensions of the duelling pole.
Beyond these doubts a new horizon appears,
As new thought forms and new frontiers,
Resound with the harmony of the spheres.

Mercury:

But maybe you’re not quite so smart,
What if your whole was just another part?
If there’s only one true purpose to pursue,
Why so many ideas to adhere to?
If there’s only one face of God divine,
Why are there so many icons on the shrine?
Aren’t there gods in all things created,
Aren’t all life’s pathways in their own ways fated?
What if the gods are a manifold many,
Not one and for all, but ten-a-penny?
Oh, for a world in which all things harmonize,
As you elegantly eulogize,
May I offer just one last word to the wise.
Let your perspective be yours and let mine be mine,
At this crossing of the roads where our journeys combine.
For what I know is true,
I know for myself, and so do you,
It’s just another view.
For one way is all ways Always,
And all the ways
Go all the way.

Gaia:

Mercury you’re my flickering sprite,
Jupiter, my one true Light.
Now walk together intertwined,
Enrich the pathways of my mind.
