Arcturus and Spica – The Unwavering Depth of the Voice of the Divine Feminine
An unwavering presence descends from the highest plumes, drawn irresistibly, almost magnetically towards her. Quietly, without fanfare, making sure that attention remains on her, takes up a position just behind her. Two protrusions dissolve out of an invisible matrix, one reaching for her right hip, the other coiling around her throat, hovering imperceptibly inches from her thorax. For those whose sight can truly see, energy emanates out from dark matter along those isthmuses towards her, spiralling along pathways of sacred geometry, opening up layers of dense ethereal matter.
She feels something shift, just as she sensed the presence. A ripple of familiar quivers along her spine, engulfing her in a wave of calmness, as her anxious landscape is flooded with soothing waves. Stretching slightly, she clears her throat. From it emerges a crystal clear tone, rising up from her root. In pianissimo it starts. Long and drawn out it wavers, as it builds and is expelled as a single, droning note.
Something stirs in her crown and between her eyes, as the pure tone drops becoming blue. The pitch slowly intensifies, as piano yields to forte, and her entire being is enveloped by wave after wave of invisible sonic geometry emanating from this presence.
It was the most beautiful sound the world had ever heard. The darkness faded, and was now blazing with stars that leapt out from the void. Her Voice crossed the passaggio, her pitch now bright and more triumphant. The sky turned in the wind of her voice stirred awake, growing steadily paler, changing from deep blue to green-blue, to light blue, with striations of pink and gold. As her Voice crescendos, the air shakes and the earth blossoms into many colours: fresh and vivid, alive and awake.
Her voice is benediction, an invocation of life, a hymnal incantation held in measured attentiveness by the steadfast sentinel. Hands unseen cradle and balance, supporting each note. Fidelity unshakable, coherence blooms. Her chant rises from beyond the Veil, a bridge between worlds, a song that carries creation with precision and care.

Arcturus
Arcturus may stretch your neck muscles in northern latitudes, as you search the skies for his presence, whereas easily seen and heard Spica sits upon her throne at the centre of the Sun’s path. Visibly far apart, yet transposed from differing constellational heights relative to the ecliptic, these two stalwart lights coalesce in tight unison at 24 degrees of Cardinal Air, making it impossible to interpret one without the other. Yet in order to understand their combined meaning embedded in both the poem and creative passage above, a brief exploration of these two well documented and known stars is where we journey to next!
A giant golden-red star of Bootes, Arcturus radiates high above the celestial equator and ecliptic, a luminous sentinel overseeing the twin bears of Ursa Major and Minor. Its brilliance illuminates the kite-shaped constellation, embodying guardianship, guidance, and the interplay of protective strength with subtle nurturing energy.
Fourth brightest in the northern skies and only 36.7 light-years from Earth, it serves as a watchful presence or sentinel of celestial pathways, a guide through transformation, and a bridge between higher awareness and daily life. Her light embodies protection, nurturing, and empowerment, guiding the soul to clarity, alignment, and the harmonisation of existence’s myriad threads.
Through her vigilance, wisdom, and protective energy, Arcturus enables a safe and grounded passage through exploration, spiritual awakening, and the unfolding of consciousness. Her presence supports the expression of divine feminine insight, the preservation of sacred wisdom, and the integration of ancestral knowledge.
She embodies the harmonisation of cosmic order and human experience, illuminating the path of the soul, and fostering a profound alignment between inner and outer worlds, between celestial patterns and earthly life, bridging past, present, and future in a luminous continuum of understanding and guidance.
Etymology
What’s in a name? In truth, everything, after all the way that a language is constructed belies the way in which the people who use that language perceive reality. In the native tongue of the Irish, there is no one word for ‘yes’, ‘no’, ‘hello’, ‘goodbye’, with the salutation ‘a chara’ used instead of ‘dear’, as strangers and those personally known are greeted as ‘friend’. In Chinese, appointments are moved up and down, as opposed to forward or backwards, revealing not only much about the cultural mind-set but also the way that reality is perceived.
The lore of the stars and their asterisms is steeped in significance, drawn from more than mere navigational use. The character of each star is formed from layers of culture that have altered and accumulated over time. It may be that this knowledge was once ‘given’ to humanity; it may be that the recurrence of certain stars - Sirius, Spica, Alcyone, Regulus and others - is the result of exchange among trading peoples; and we need to keep in mind that stars, like people, change in their outlook and message over time rather than remain static, a possibility our Tradition appears reluctant to allow.
This is especially clear with Arcturus, which has for the most part retains its Latin name, taken directly from the Greek Arktouros, and translates as Bear Guard, from this its meaning has been largely drawn. The same is true of the planets and of the ‘newer’ bodies discovered within our solar system. The reliance on Greek and Latin does not make the meanings incorrect, for often a name and its mythology reflect one another with remarkable accuracy.
Yet once you step outside the Classical frame, a wider meaning emerges, revealing how each culture relates to, and is able to ‘hear’, the star in question. Arcturus was linked to Enlil, the god of fairness and was known as Papsukal in Mesopotamia, The Guardian Messenger. In Egypt she was honoured as Smat, the ruler and governor of the heavens, and Bau, the coming one. In Arabia, she was Al Simak al Ramih, the lofty lance-bearer, and Al Haris al Simak, keeper of Spica. In India, she appears as Svati, a gem of the Nakshatra guided by Vayu. In China, she was Da Jiao, the Great Horn, residing in the imperial palace and guiding the celestial tail of the Bear. And the Polynesian navigators called her Hokule'a, the Star of Joy, while many First Nation Americans revered her as the Old Man or Kookoogwéss, the owl.
Known in the Old Gaelic language as An Chiarsóg, Arcturus is known as the little black thing.
The root ciar conveys darkness, a space of potential, and a shadowed region where things quietly emerge. Affixed with the diminutive -óg, the word becomes a small and intimate presence, a little being that holds mystery. Chiarsóg arises from the word ciaróg, beetle, a creature that lives close to the soil, often emerging from hidden places, carrying its own armour and quiet resilience. But what in modernity is known as ‘dark’ or ‘black’ is often the absence of what can be grasped, not the absence of reality, and the presence of a consciousness degraded since the advent of the Age of Aries – the Yin.
An Chiarsóg conveys a reverence for what appears small yet shelters, conceals, protects and nurtures a greater mystery – the ‘silent’ creative space which enables Spica to ‘articulate’ her message, a message that arises out from this creative ‘void’.
Everything in our known universe speaks, even if the tongue is alien to our ears, regardless of the language we are native to. Radio astronomers can hear the plasma waves of the planets and can render them into a pitch and frequency that we can understand, and it is my belief that our predecessors heard the sky with differing ears to our today. It is conceivable that the Irish referred to Arcturus as a beetle because of the clicking tone that emits from her, just in the same way that a beetle clicks in its movement. Our native tongue has been close to extinction for myriad reasons and our ancient lore almost lost, as the Irish, like many indigenous tribes around the world, retained their lore via the oral and aural tradition, rarely put to paper. Many indigenous cultures use the ‘click’ as a means of language, so foreign to those who were raised in Europe. Since those cultures were ‘sky’ people, I wonder if their language, just as our understanding of harmonics and music, has come from listening to the stars and the sky? It is speculation, but to my Mutable Water mind, it makes some sense!!

The Bear
But of course a brief on Arcturus cannot be complete without mentioning the bear.
Strength, protection, and ferocity coexist with gentleness and care, her energy embodying the mothering aspect of nature, a fierce yet nurturing presence facilitating safe passage through life’s thresholds, altered states, or encounters with death.
She supports exploration of spiritual realms, offering grounding and protection while illuminating deeper truths.
Many Native American tribes saw the bear as a master healer who in using plants to support its own health taught humans about their medicinal properties. This prompted many a shaman to don the mantle of the bear skin as a literal aide to, or symbolic gesture of the, journey between worlds.
Bears disappear and return in the cycle of hibernation and this gives rise to the emblem of rebirth, the bear-mother’s licking of their offspring as they emerge from the Little Death (Winter) being seen as the construct of order out of the fertile chaos of the deep retreat.
The Bear is evocative of another dimension of the mothering aspect of nature, in stark contrast to the literature that refers to Arcturus as being Yang or masculine. There feels something deeply Yin, but in a proactive and dynamic manner.
After all, the bear totem feels determined, fierce and protective, yet profoundly gentle, firm and resolute, akin to the unwavering unconditional love and acceptance that many a mother feels towards her children.
Glyph
The trinity of spirit mediates a truncated cross of matter, as the spiritual initiate’s aspirations are dependent upon the surrender of the ego, in the little death, so that the mysteries of the heart are given the change to freely flow without the desire to be acknowledged. Foresight, stewardship, and responsibility, are qualities projected into human consciousness as the ability to organise, guide, and manifest principles with clarity and discernment.
She oversees thresholds between worlds, supporting journeys through astral realms, shamanic explorations, or transitions in life and death. Her stabilising presence safeguards consciousness, enabling the integration of higher awareness into earthly existence.

She mediates between subtle and material realities, allowing cosmic light to flow without overwhelming the observer, a guardian of wisdom and protector of spiritual journeys. Arcturus’ influence reaches into the imagination and the cultivation of consciousness, guiding the soul to perceive and integrate universal principles.
She fosters the harmonisation of inner and outer worlds, connecting ancestral lineage with personal insight, and bridging the individual with collective consciousness. She nurtures clarity, courage, and alignment with the flow of creation.
Summary of Arcturus
Arcturus is a sentinel of celestial pathways, a guide through transformation, and a bridge between higher awareness and daily life. Her light invites courage, reflection, and attunement to cosmic rhythms. She embodies protection, nurturing, and empowerment, interweaving celestial cycles with the inner landscape of consciousness, guiding the soul to clarity, alignment, and the harmonisation of existence’s myriad threads.
Spica
Whispering tales of ancient goddesses and lunar priestesses, her light, a soft hymn that resonates with the wisdom of generations, dances across the fabric of consciousness. The celestial muse, inspiring poets to pen verses that mirror the beauty of her cosmic ballet, her Lydian melody is an enchantment for those listening to the voice of the divine feminine essence, toning in the diaphanous droning chant of the universe.
In the hushed serenade of Spica's glow, harmony resonates out from this guardian of the cosmic womb. Her light, a gentle caress on the face of the night, carries with it the timeless overtones of feminine wisdom the stem from the depths of our primal source.
One of the truly great stars in the sky, it is from Spica that the word ‘star’ was born. She is at least as important as the four Royal, or archangel, stars. Before emerging in her own right as a cosmic ‘category’ on the 1st of January 1801, this 16th brightest star located in the somatic region of our celestial ocean, was at one time associated with the goddess Ceres. A blue giant in the constellation of Virgo, she is found at the 24th degree of tropical Libra and she is one of the cosmic gateways through which the deeper feminine is reached.
Exemplifying celestial intimacy, her twin stars orbit each other every four days, pulled into egg-shaped forms by mutual gravity, their combined light subtly fluctuating as they dance through the void, one blazing with overwhelming brilliance, the other a potent companion, epitomising interdependence and shared energy, a parable for relational dynamics and the entwining of purpose.
The considerable distance between Spica and its nearest neighbours has inspired some cultures to call her ‘The Lonely One’, often to distinguish her from the equally prominent Arcturus, located on almost the same Zodiacal longitude but higher in the sky and much closer to its neighbours in Bootes.
The Celestial Virgin and the Sacred Womb or Seed
Known as the Star of Prosperity to the Egyptians, Ab-Sin (the furrow) to the Sumerians, and Shal (goddess of grain) to the Babylonians, the symbolism and mythology of Spica and Virgo have also been enmeshed to the point that they are, at times, indistinguishable.
In most cultures, the constellation Virgo was seen as a maiden holding a sheaf of wheat, symbolising both fertility and the harvest, her name Spica being derived from the Latin word meaning & of grain or spike further reinforcing the connection between this brilliant star and the agricultural symbolism of Virgo. In former times, the rising of Spica in the North was closely observed as a marker for the changing seasons, particularly signalling the time for planting and harvesting.
In ancient Egypt, particularly the later periods, Spica was seen as the Goddess Isis, a deity embodying motherhood, fertility, and magic. In later esoteric Christian traditions, the Virgo constellation was associated with the Virgin Mary and Spica with the Christ-child [1]. This correlation is further emphasised by the associations between Isis and Mary Magdalene, who reportedly trained in Egypt as a Vestal Virgin, a spiritual faction wherein female spiritual teachers received their training.
Arising from the Virgoan associations, a zodiacal sign that is correlated with the emanations of the hidden divinity within each soul, Spica symbolises the sacred womb of the Virgin. This contrasts with Virgo’s womb of form symbolism, as it is within the Virgo archetype that the Christ consciousness is shielded and guarded whilst gOd’s plan unfolds and the Christ child within you can be birthed, as Virgo is the celestial Chalice for the Divine Host. Virgo, technically the only overt female figure in the zodiac, is responsible for shielding, nurturing and revealing (at the appointed hour) the hidden spiritual reality to humanity.
A Voice of the Feminine
She is the Clarion Tone of the Divine Feminine [2] . Revealing herself through non-linear expressions, she communicates through the messages of your dreams, when you chant or tone, when you meditate during your Moon-time, and when you walk in the open air, her guidance is experiential, a knowing beyond verbal articulation, inviting clarity and integrity.
Though her message is loud and clear, it is still experiential, based on a ‘knowing’. It is right action without judgement, without vitriol and without imposition. Akin to Justice and Truth, it lacks the arrogance of righteousness. It touches on the sense of power within. From this place you are no longer a victim or disempowered as your voice carries a tonal quality to it, a quality that goes beyond the rhetoric of the words themselves.
The Branch
The Hebrew word for the star Spica is Tsemach and means ’the branch’, found in four places in the Old Testament [3]. Yeshua taught the significance of the sheaf of wheat in John 12:24, when he says “I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies it produces many seeds.” Spica is that the sheaf of wheat is pointed down to the ground. Mythopoetically the Seed is of Woman, or the branch/ Messiah, the sheaf of wheat she is symbolically carrying in her left hand, the child she will bring into the world, will be born to die. Combining the star picture with the analogy taught by Yeshua, we see the truth that his death will not be in vain but will multiply seeds or believing ones on the earth.
Glyph
Spica is depicted uniting the waxing and waning crescents of the Moon with the axis of time, interlaced by five circles of spirit. The space between ending and beginning, speaking of the ‘red-time’ that only women know, she has her soul nestled between the world of matter and the world of the ether. Her ensouled nature brings the spirit of Mind, Body, Heart and Divinity into being, but requires the union with the spirit of another to truly manifest in time. This speaks of the ability to birth and the sacredness of union that the feminine seeks.
The Union of Arcturus and Spica
Arcturus 24º 33’ Tropical Libra
Spica 24º 11’ Topical Libra
Together they merge to offer our whimsical consciousness the opportunity to freely articulate the power of creation in a steadfast and resolutely protected manner. Arising out from the depth of hidden wisdom, knowledge that is far beyond our mortal comprehension, Arcturus’ presence is to open our awareness to the mysteries of the deepened feminine, reminding us of the mysteries of the unconditioned chaos from which life is birthed, mysteries that seem long forgotten to those who are blinded by the future and by stockpiling the fruits of the Earth. Without Arcturus’ presence, Spica’s voice wavers and is unable to reach the depth and steadiness that awakens Nature. Without Spica’s presence, Arcturus’ quiet knowingness is unheard by the loudness of Earth’s busyness. They are mutually supportive of each other, and work as a unified Field, cradling Nature with an exacting attention, offering sanctuary for the Yin mind to emerge with unbroken precision and unshakeable fidelity.
For those specifically attuned to this coherence (Spica and Arcturus being in tight harmonic aspect to sensitive planetary positions in the natal chart), the offering is to speak with unwavering clarity, to listen with measured attentiveness, and to create with conviction and purposefulness. Spica’s voice unfurls from within the subtle architecture that Arcturus envelopes her with. She is protected by this Presence, who stands resolute in silently observing. In a world that is used to frenetic mental busyness, Arcturus may be misinterpreted as being somewhat indifferent, or indeed simple. Yet within the living matrix that Arcturus resides, emptiness is replete with potential, after all from nothingness creation is birthed. Spica’s sonorous chanting opens up the ‘blackness’ and that which is invisible becomes tangible light, light that is ever-constant, focused and radiant with a ‘Christos’ aura.
Found within the third decan of Cardinal Air, a sign known for its ability to speak forth from the heart, without debate, reflection or discussion; a fertile landscape that nourishes ideas to flourish; a sacred voice, rich and clear, that opens up awareness and gateways of sight enabling creation to unfold; Arcturus and Spica’s merged presence ensures that Libra is a place of radiance and vigilance; of attentiveness and clarity; as well as unwavering commitment to a single idea or ideal.
Example - Audre Lorde
Born with Spica and Arcturus conjoined Jupiter, Audre Lorde is a radiant example of how this pairing speak.
Her voice, fearless and unflinching, emerged from depths of lived experience, carrying the spark of potential into forms that illuminate hidden truths.
Like Spica, she nurtures the seed of becoming, each publication being a kernel of generative power, each poem a harvest of insight that cultivates awareness and awakens conscience. Yet her brilliance is enfolded in the attentive precision of Arcturus: every utterance measured, every argument carefully held in integrity, so that the radiance does not scatter but penetrates with exacting resonance.
Her work embodies the paradox of openness and protection. Her intellect and imagination are unleashed, yet the spaces she creates are safeguarded; a cradle for consciousness to expand without collapse. She carries forward ancestral knowledge, the wisdom of unrecorded histories, and through her art and activism these truths find form in the present. Like the little black sentinel, Lorde’s presence steadies and orients, allowing the transformative power of her voice to reach deep into hearts, fostering recognition, courage, and alignment with the hidden currents of justice and care.
Her legacy demonstrates the interplay of illumination and containment. Her creation flows freely, yet each pulse is held in purpose; clarity dances alongside empathy. She enacts the Spica/Arcturus field, showing how luminous expression and vigilant reception can coalesce, producing a path through which others may encounter their own unexamined potential.
Summary of their combined meaning
I appreciate that the interpretation of both Arcturus and Spica slightly differ from the tradition, but like any living language, meaning alters as consciousness shifts and what may have held meaning in the past, may not have the same value or is heard in the same way in contemporary times. The traditional interpretations of these stars are well documented, so forgive me if I do not reference them in the following summary.
In future publications I will discuss how to ‘use’ the star lore in any given chart interpretation.
[1] Research suggests the possibility that Spica was the biblical Star of Bethlehem
[2] As opposed to Vega (in Cardinal Earth) who is the Sonance of the Divine Feminine
[3] Isaiah 4:2; Jeremiah 23:5-6; Zechariah 3:8; and Zechariah 6:12. In all four passages the word Tsemach is in reference to the Messiah: He will be beautiful and glorious (Isaiah); He will be a King out of the line of David (Jeremiah); He will be a servant (Zechariah 3); He will be a man (Zechariah 6)
