Saturn retrograde April 6th 2017 28°  Sagittarius – station direct August 25th 2017 21° Sagittarius.

Saturn retrogrades on April 6th 2017 at 6:06 am UTC at the 28th degree of Sagittarius and emerges station direct on August 25th 2017 at Sagittarius 21. We have a lot of work to do during these four months and here are some thoughts to assist in our journey.

Let’s begin with Saturn in Sagittarius. Since September of 2015 Saturn’s transit through Sagittarius has offered us the opportunity to consider and name our beliefs, philosophies and spiritual leanings. As the great energy of boundaries and definitions, Saturn rules limits, rules, and structure.  Life’s meaning is based upon whatever choices we consider to be true fed by the Gemini axis of logic, research and facts. My definition of what is true to me (Sagittarius) is based upon whatever information (Gemini) I have at my disposal.

Gemini rules the news and media. Since Saturn’s transit in Sagittarius we have witnessed the explosion of `alternative’ news groups, independent journalists, so-called independent journalists who really wear the hats of ideologues, the disparity between mainstream news organizations and alternative news organizations. We’ve even recently coined the term; fake news! What can anyone believe when there are disparate `facts’? And the Sagittarius part of our natures depends upon the Gemini polarity to have clear-cut information.

Whenever Saturn transits Sagittarius news becomes the news. When I was a wide-eyed journalist in TV and radio in the early 1980’s I learned, and practiced the “Fairness Doctrine”. This US Federal Communications Commission policy had stated that any broadcast entity must present `both sides’ of any controversial issue of public importance. In 1987 this policy was abolished, during the last transit of Saturn in Sagittarius based on the precept of free speech.

Freedom is just another word for Sagittarius, and, what is left to lose? During this Saturn in Sagittarius transit we all have the freedom of gathering whatever information we want from whatever source we choose. But the struggle of discernment is a real one. We live in an `information’ overload world. ANYONE can have access to disseminating whatever information they wish to as many minds as the world- wide web holds.

The dark side of Saturn in Sagittarius is dogmatic and polarized ways of thinking. Critics of the abolishment of the `fairness doctrine’ had predicted a political polarization and we have certainly witnessed this of late. Take a wide lens look at the great political divide of these past 18 months! It’s not just the `political’ types who are identified with their beliefs. This axis of division has bubbled forth to the greater collective consciousness, so that the new definition of `who I am ‘is based upon ideology; liberal vs conservative, ultra right vs ultra left, which is often mitigated upon religious leanings.

We enter the Saturn retrograde period with a challenge. As with any retrograde these next four months are a time to redo, rethink, and reconsider.  Start with this question; Why do you believe what you believe? It’s time to go within to examine your political, religious and philosophical beliefs. Explore the sources of your beliefs; your Holy Books, your news organizations, your favorite websites, your friends. Here’s a suggestion; consciously explore the `other side’ of your present beliefs. Take a conservative…or a liberal…out to lunch, and pass the talking stick to each other and LISTEN to the other’s point of view. Saturn in Sagittarius says you are free to change your mind.

Don’t make your lunch reservations quite yet! We may already be feeling isolationist, a sense that `no one quite understands us’ as this week unfolds.  One attribute of this week’s Saturn retrograde is that it is squaring Venus which is also retrograde!

Saturn square Venus on `good days’ is cautious socially. While both planets are retrograde, we may be experiencing the `dark night’ of the soul as we attempt to connect to others. Perhaps the underlying message is not to expect our loved ones to be extensions of ourselves, but rather their own distinct flawed and limited beings. As the retrograde opens it may be best to spend time with self and connect with your own version of the Bigger Self. Once Venus stations direct on April 16th, our sense of isolation of thought may begin to dissipate.

The Saturn in retrograde period offers us an opportunity to redo more than our beliefs. As the ruler of structures and discernment and discipline where the retrograde falls in your chart is where you can recapture your commitment to excellence. Saturn is the lord of this plane; ruling gravity, time, and yes maturation and death and decay. Questions to consider: how am I using my time? How can I work more efficiently? If I only had `X’ amount of time on this planet what would I be doing? Create that bucket list this summer with greater clarity and focus.

Ultimately the Saturn is Sagittarius message is to motivate us to be own authority of our own truth. When we are aligned with the principal of `truth’ which is culled and cultivated through discernment, discipline and hard work we can truly be free to be our authentic self.

The sabian symbol as the retrograde occurs is `a fat boy mowing the lawn.’ In what areas of our life do we need to `saturnize’, in other words, tighten up, reduce, contract? We are asked to plow ahead with maintaining whatever we already have.  The chore of `mowing the lawn’ is an act of maintaining our outer appearances, even if we’d rather just hang out and indulge our appetites.

The following is a `cookbook’ offering of the Saturn in Sagittarius retrograde. Blend your sun/ with the ascending sign for insight:

Aries: Redo and reflect upon your essential beliefs based upon your precepts and concepts. Step into your own authority to teach and share your truth.

Taurus: Redo and reflect upon your personal power. Explore ways to work with others without losing your essential dignity or authority.

Gemini: Reevaluate your personal connections. Be at peace if your significant other doesn’t think exactly as you do. Let go of outworn connections which are limiting your growth.

Cancer: Redo your personal commitment to health practices. Diet, exercise and reshape your physical self into your healthiest self.

Leo: Reevaluate pastimes which have served their purpose. Align with your essential creative spark and commit to accomplishing a goal which reflects a heart’s desire.

Virgo: Redo your home. Let go of outworn objects and clutter. Reevaluate family relationships and remind yourself that no one can make you feel `bad’ without your permission.

Libra: Redo your schedule and your focus. Put up boundaries from time-wasters so you can recommit to achieving goals connected to writing, marketing, communication and networking.

Scorpio: Time to redo your finances. Put yourself on an austerity budget until you achieve your money goals. Fix, redo and maintain your possessions.

Sagittarius: An excellent time to complete the task of authenticity! Focus on self and self-goals as you become free to be you in every situation.

Capricorn: Time to redo your commitment to spiritual practices; meditate, pray. Discover what feeds your soul.

Aquarius: Redo and reevaluate your social connections. Time to spend time with only the people who matter. Let go of those contacts who don’t allow you to be `you.’

Pisces: Redo and reevaluate the steps needed to make your contribution to the world successful. Your career is calling; answer it with focus and resolve.

May you navigate a Saturn retrograde period which leads you to the freedom of authenticity!
