LOve. It is one of the most powerful emotions that fuel our lives. Hate, fear and anxiety have nothing on the power of lOve. After all, ‘love is not love which alters when it alteration finds, or bends with the remover to remove. O no! It is an ever-fixed mark that looks on tempests and is never shaken’ (Shakespeare) ‘Love is the diamond’ (Rumi) the everlasting jewel that guides and informs all our actions, without which we are bereft and lost.

Persistence

Persistence is an essential part of love. It is what really keeps us going – whether the love of another; the prospects of finding love with another; the love of an ideal; the love of a team; the love of a concept. The absolute and exclusive passion of someone or something is the stuff of literature and movies – Stephen Kings’ The Shawshank Redemption, Nicholas Sparks’ The Notebook and Dante’s The Divine Comedy are but a very limited example. So too the devotion shown by mystics to their spiritual path; of unwavering belief in Jeanne D’Arc, of Michael Collins and anyone else who has been persecuted for what they feel is true, a list which I am sure you could freely add examples of without any research or deep reflection or recollection.

Liu Guojiang, in a country where marriageability centres on altogether materialistic values, gave up everything he knew and owned to be with the one he loved. Rural China in 1956 is a very different place to what it is now and this was the year that Liu eloped with a woman he fell in love with some ten years earlier. Xu was an older widow of four children. Their love went against the values held by both their families and local community.

They moved to the seclusion of a mountain cave, where they lived for 50 years without electricity and other modern comforts. As they got older Liu hand-carved more than 6,000 steps into the rock, which his son called the “Ladder of Love” so that his wife would be able to easily make her way up and down the mountainside. Their story was voted as the most romantic story in China in 2007.

The dark side of Persistence

“Never let your persistence and passion turn into stubbornness and ignorance.” (Anthony J. D’Angelo)

Persistence needs a partner. Hope and anguish can coexist and still create something truly amazing. Persistence is the ability to maintain action regardless of your feelings. Just as fear is a prerequisite for courage, challenge is a prerequisite for perseverance. The value of persistence comes from a vision of the future that’s so compelling you would give almost anything to make it real.

Persistence of action comes from persistence of vision, a vision that arises not simply from ego but from a deep sense of knowingness that you and the path ahead are one. Simply measuring how long someone sticks with a task does not adequately capture the essence of perseverance because continuing to perform something that is fun or easy does not involve the overcoming of obstacles or disappointment. Some goals are truly impossible to reach, and some outcomes are simply unavoidable, and it takes wisdom to know when it is time to quit and move on to something else.

Thomas Edison did not invent the light bulb on his first try; rather, he put more than 6,000 substances to the test, overcoming distraction, fear and boredom, before he discovered that carbonized cotton thread makes a nice filament for the electric light bulb.

Yet there exists a very fine line between determination and obsession; tenacity and fixation; pursuit and stalking; and unwatering or unyielding and intimidation! This is especially so when romantic love is the focus and for the neutral they make for compelling and fascinating art. Eminem’s Stan, The Police’s Every Breath You Take or Hungry Like the Wolf by Duran Duran are but three songs that immediately jump to mind, as does the stories of Cathy and Heathcliff in Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights, Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, and Star Wars’ Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala.

As Kenny Rogers says, “You got to know when to hold ’em and know when to fold ’em.”

Scorpio, or Fixed Water

Consequently it is not hard to understand why the much maligned and misunderstood sign associated with the persistency of emotions, Scorpio, has been reduced by astrologers to that of a revenge-seeking, brooding and smouldering emotional sociopath; a power hungry, never giving up stalker who holds anyone they love hostage; or is scary to the point of isolating themselves serving only to further heighten their already complex and convoluted inner world. In short, Scorpio is replete with themes that are the stuff of movies!

But if we remove ourselves from the patriarchal notion of rulerships and explore Scorpio as a consciousness filter composed of elemental Water, or Heart, and of modal Fixity, or Inner, Scorpio takes on a different hue: the inner heart; the persistent heart; or the deep well of imaginal impulses.

The term ‘fixity’ means turning inwards, away from the external world and its myriad distractions, to focus solely on what lies within. And this is not an easy path, as the inner world is full of many complex scripts and patterns, legacies from your ancestors, experiences as a child that have shaped your perception, and encounters when you were less conscious that have shaped your perception of reality.

Turning inwards means descending into yourself and that therefore means, meeting yourself! Water refers to the heart an imagination. Therefore Fixed Water simply means turning into your heart.

Fixed Water is a state of being that accounts for our experience of the constancy of our private and discreet emotions. Everything is ultimately fuelled by an inner feeling and it is these feelings and the reality that is generated by them that govern the quality of your life.

What is that fuel?

Your overall level of happiness, fulfilment and joy are ultimately dependent on how you perceive reality, which is turn is reflected in how you have interpreted your experiences, which have also been filtered through the unique scripts and patterns that are held within your cosmic DNA!

So whilst it is true to say that if you perceive reality through a lens of hopelessness, misery and futility, you will forge neural pathways within your brain that will perpetually reinforce those feelings, thereby helping you create this reality, it is also true that in order to alter your perception of reality, you need to turn inwards and understand the root emotion that drives your perception and what you have gained from sitting with that persistent emotion!

The first step is to be really honest with yourself about how you feel and what drives those feelings. The second step is to understand what is it that you are gaining from that feeling? Pain is a great teacher, so too is guilt! Once you have tapped into both the root and gain, it is possible to raise up the level to which you feel, and to transmutate those feelings into a fuel for a more conscious expression.

For example, if you are in a relationship what was the feeling that motivated you to be with someone? Is it loneliness, desire, companionship, or intellectual stimulation? Is it is reaction to previous experiences, thereby still fuelled in compensation to something? Does it come from your ego or from a deeper place of stillness? Does it come from societal expectations and pressures, or indeed is it more primal – a biological urge to mate?

What are you gaining from this pursuit? What is the consistent emotion that keeps arising when on this path? What have you learnt or experienced from that emotion? Do you feel content with having a relationship with that emotion? After all, it is a persistent companion that you are in a relationship to!

To descend inwards to the heart requires this sort of reflection, as you encounter complexes and scenarios that have shaped and informed your heart’s reality. It means replaying experiences and revisiting territory that may harbour intense and powerful feelings. But it is the strength of those feelings that is the fuel to keep you on the path, especially if you are re-direct that energy from a less conscious into a more conscious expression.

And within the astrological lexicon, this is what the Fixed Water state is all about – the generation and nourishment of a constant source of emotional fuel to animate your life!

The New Moon in Fixed Water

The fact that the emotions that define the creation of reality are ‘fixed’ or persistent implies that re-working them will not happen over-night, no matter how effective your affirmations or visualisations are. But you need to start somewhere, so why not during the forthcoming lunation, when the energetic conditions are highlighting how persistent thoughts and constant emotions create our world.

In the pre-dawn in Ireland on the 15th of November, the Sun and Moon come together within the zodiacal sign of tropical Scorpio. During such alignments you are afforded the opportunity to replenish and renew your relationship with the consciousness filter within which the Lights of our sOul illuminate.

November’s lunation is a time wherein you can hold a space around the feeling that emotes the creation of your life. This ‘Fixed Water’ state is simply a constantly charged emotional state of being that underlies all of your actions. It is everlasting love. It is unwavering friendship. It is undistracted focus. It is what inspires you. It is what motivates you to action.

By turning inwards and allowing yourself truly feel; by understanding the roots of what motivates that feeling; and by being honest with yourself in knowing what you have gained from your relationship with that emotion, will enable you to accept, forgive and heal any marginalised emotion that may have previously motivated you. It is only then will your visualisations have an impact on permanently generating a new positive gravitational force that will enable you to escape any emotional black holes.

And Lord knows that we need a more constructive emotional vision for our world, as we continue to move through the early days of this unprecedented redistribution of power! I’d love to imagine a world created by love as opposed to in reaction to the fear that reigns; by joy, as opposed to hoping that joy will at some point emerge; and by inclusiveness, recognising the sovereignty of the inner heart of every living being. The Kairos is ripe for a new world. Why not one rooted from a place healed, empowered and conscious, as lOve becomes the Diamond force, ever constant and unwavering in the face of chaos and division?
