Heralding Changes: Mars in Taurus, 14 February to 31 March, 2019

Mars likes to lead the way – he rules the first sign of the zodiac, Aries, after all. And after a very busy time in his home sign that included a dynamic meeting with Uranus at 29 degrees, he strides into Taurus on 14 February 2019. Mars in Taurus is sensual, practical, and persistent – sometimes persistent to the point of stubbornness. He gets us to focus on the material world, and can encourage us to be too rapacious in our enjoyment of it – he’s no environmentalist.
Yet it may be in his role of herald that we can learn the most from Mars in Taurus this year. That’s because he’s announcing the arrival of Uranus, who gets into the sign of the bull on the 6th of March. Mars’ presence in a sign energizes it, bringing our collective attention to the social, economic, and political issues associated with it. With Uranus right behind him, we’ll be feeling the winds of change all the more strongly.
Likely areas to be energized are finance, our food supply, energy sources, and the environment. Like Uranus, Mars will probably bring our attention to these areas by upsetting things. Neither planet is inclined to gentle persuasion or measured messages. Rather, they tend to work by disrupting the status quo and highlighting problems. Of course, neither planet particularly cares what we do about the issues they present to us – those are matters for humans to handle on our own.
While Mars’ time in Taurus may be seen as disruptive, the Cosmic Warrior does make a series of constructive aspects during his time in the sign, indicating a possible solution to every problem. A sextile to the Sun in Pisces on February 27th has the potential for compassionate action, although those with other motivations may find that it also offers the opportunity for excessive action. Very much the same thing could be said of Mars’ sextile to Neptune on March 10th, although the imaginative possibilities are greater with this less realistic aspect, as are the the potential pitfalls. Immigration and refugee (Pisces) issues are likely to be very charged at this time.
It’s in the middle of March that Mars is most active, with trines to Saturn on the 14th and Pluto on the 20th. Here, Mars is likely to act as an agent of authority and power. No inherent value judgements can be attached to these aspects – it depends who has the authority and power, how they use it, and how each of us feels about it. Given the emphasis on immigration and refugees, we may see that Mars in Taurus helps to get Donald Trump’s wall built, but could also open up new opportunities for legal integration.
On a more personal level, Mars squares Venus on March 21st, just as the Goddess of Love sextiles Jupiter. This period of time could be good for romance, and it certainly has a very sensual feel.
The fixed signs, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius are likely to feel Mars’ energy most directly, in part because it may be accompanied by some discomfort. Taurus is generally energized, and with Uranus on his way that’s something bulls will have to get used to. Lions may find that career is taking center stage in their lives – and perhaps demanding more time than they would like. Scorpios will be focused on partnership but might also find that they encounter a worthy opponent. Aquarius will likely see things heat up around the home and family.
Cardinal signs get along well with Mars, and can appreciate change as long as they are able to direct it. Aries will miss the helpful presence of their ruler but can focus on finance. Cancer might be busy with social plans and group activities. Libra doesn’t get a direct hit from the Taurus placement, but could deal with financial issues around loans, taxes, or insurance. Capricorn is in a very good position to make things happen in general, but particularly in creative endeavors.
Mutable signs might have the most difficulty incorporating the energy of Mars in Taurus. Gemini feels the charge, but can’t quite locate it for practical purposes. Virgo can appreciate the potential for education, exploration, and travel. Sagittarians might find some issues at work, and it’s a very good time to begin an exercise program (especially after March 8th) and generally be mindful of health and well-being. Pisces, like Capricorn, has an overall benefit from Mars in Taurus, but will need to provide sufficient motivation to turn potential into action.
