The Devil’s in the Details: Mars in Virgo (5 September – October, 2017)

Mars ends a bold six weeks in Leo on 5 September, taking more cautious steps as he enters Virgo. Mars likes action, while Virgo is a more considerate sign, sometimes given to vacillation and second-guessing. In the sign of the Virgin, Mars sometimes doesn’t know what to do, yet he isn’t given to sitting still, either. A good cause is just the thing to motivate him – and us – to make the most of this six week period.

Watch what you say around September 16th, when Mars catches up to Mercury. Sharp words could result, and maybe a few barbed comments. On the other hand, this aspect is great for saying what you really mean and getting to the point (if you don’t get lost in the details and forget what the point was). Issues that came up earlier in the month could be resolved, or at least clarified now.

Clarity may be lacking on the 24th of September, when Mars opposes Neptune. This aspect can take us to extremes of action – or inaction. Mars and Neptune can have us tilting at windmills on quixotic quests, but can also lead us to throw in the towel because we believe everything is hopeless. Watch out for a Virgoan obsession with details, too, and be sure you don’t lose sight of the forest among the trees.

Power can be focused to an end as Mars trines Pluto on October 3rd. Pluto is very powerful now, having just stationed to turn direct on September 28th. While Mars in Virgo may vacillate at times, he’s likely to help us apply laser-like precision to tasks around this time. This energy helps us to further our individual and collective goals.

With Venus joining the party on the 5th, there could be strong passion in the air. This is also the night of the full moon in Aries, so Mars will be especially active. Make the most of the first week in October, for love and relationship as well as everything else in life.

After a couple of weeks of high-energy excitement, we may hit the brakes a bit as Mars squares Saturn on the 11th. Saturn likes to focus Mars, although that may be redundant with the energy of Virgo. Excesses may be paired back, though, and we may find that there are some limits we have to honor.

As Mars pushes forward past Saturn, he opposes Chiron on the 15th, an aspect that can have a strong healing effect but which can also feel a little uncomfortable. Mars in Virgo can reopen old wounds with surgical precision, helping us to share our pain – although we may inflict a little, too, if we aren’t careful. Try to be especially kind and compassionate to others, and yourself, around this time.

Mars leaves for Libra on the 22nd of October, and as he picks his way through the last of Virgo we may get to see the most direct expression of his energy in this sign. Put it to good use, with studying, research, editing, and any work that requires precision and energy.

Individual signs will feel this energy differently. Virgos will get the most direct boost of energy, but Taurus and Capricorn will also get a strong jolt of Martial energy that can be used for just about anything. Taurus may be more interested in using this for creative activities and play, while Capricorn can apply the energy towards travel or education.

Leos can use Mars’ time in Virgo to focus on finances, while Sagittarius will probably see this as an opportunity to advance in career. Aries may have the most difficulty with their ruler in Virgo, and channeling the energy into work or developing a sensible diet and exercise routine is a good, if not necessarily appealing, strategy. The full moon on October 5th may be the best time for Aries to get a handle on this energy.

Gemini will see Mars in Virgo as a time to focus on home and family. Work around the house is one possibility. Keep in mind that Mars might signal a little contention with close family members, so give folks their space. Libra will feel this energy indirectly, perhaps as energy or irritation coming from an unknown source. Aquarians may have to deal with power brokers like banks and bureaucracies.

Cancerians can use the energy of Mars in Virgo to improve daily routines. It sounds a bit mundane, but our daily lives are the background on which we paint the grand designs of things like relationship and career: how wonderful is your job if you’re stuck in traffic for two hours each way to get to it? Scorpio will feel the Virgoan vibe in friendships and professional associations. It’s a good time for networking and looking at long-range goals. Pisces are of course drawn into the Virgo/Pisces dynamic described above, and will feel it personally. Relationships may be an area where Pisceans are feeling especially sensitive, and may vacillate between two sides of passion – conflict and compassion.
