Defensive Line: Mars in Scorpio 19 November 2019 – 3 January 2020

If the best defense is a good offense, we’re likely to feel very safe over the six weeks that Mars traverses his second home of Scorpio. Yet for many of us, there could be some anxieties brewing as the Cosmic Warrior is both active and reactive after being bogged down by paperwork and procedures in Libra.

Mars plays defense in the sign of the scorpion. He’s up on the castle walls, firing catapults and arrows at the invaders – and perhaps also mistakenly at guests and well-meaning visitors. Usually, he fires a few warning shots before taking serious aim, but that may not be the case this time around.

Consider that Mars enters his home sign just as Mercury stations to move direct a little farther along in Scorpio. There’s a strong possibility that a misunderstanding or miscommunication leads to a reaction, so try to keep some perspective as Mars makes his transition around the 19th and 20th of November.

Yet the potential for reactivity remains strong as Mars opposes Uranus on the 24th. This is the first time in about 80 years that Mars has opposed Uranus while the latter is in Taurus, so we’ll have to see how they manage the interaction. Scorpio and Taurus both like stability, but Mars and Uranus tend to have a degree of volatility.

There’s a kind of “straw that breaks the camel’s back”, dam-gives-way energy about this aspect that suggests some folks may be on a hair trigger when it comes to anger, and temper tantrums are a possibility. Give others, and yourself, some space as needed if things start getting hot. Be careful driving, too, as this mixture can signal road rage.

The excesses of a Venus/Jupiter conjunction and Neptune’s impending station to go direct can add fuel to the Mars/Uranus volatility, but more optimistically they could also suggest some movement forward in terms of sexual energy, and may place a positive spin on this high-energy aspect.

Mars’ next major aspect is a sextile to Venus, who will be in one of his favorite signs, Capricorn, on December 3rd. Building in relationships is a possibility, whether that means moving to a more intimate connection or formalizing a partnership in some way. Although Venus will still be ‘out of bounds’ (beyond the maximum latitude of the Sun), it could be a very good time to make progress on a business deal, too.

The potential that is seeded around the meeting of Mars and Venus may come to fruition at the full moon on December 12th. This full moon is surrounded by charged aspects, including Venus’ meetings with Saturn and Pluto, and Mars trine to Neptune. There’s a kind of deadline feel to these aspects when it comes to relationships, and the possibility of sudden decisions that can go one way or the other, but are bound to feel significant. Mars and Neptune can fuel positive imagination or challenging paranoia, and are likely to add some drama to this powerful full moon. Take a step back if things get overwhelming, but if you are sure what you want and need, it’s time for decisive action.

From December 19th to the 22nd, Mars knits together the impending Saturn/Pluto conjunction, making sextiles to both planets. On the collective level, this is quite likely to play out as an apparent consolidation of power, and perhaps even a crackdown on dissent. Yet the key word is apparent, as we may find that the power brokers are under too much stress to maintain the status quo for long. On the other hand, it is just in such times of vulnerability that the powers-that-be tend to be most draconic in their actions. With a solar eclipse pending on the 26th, there’s reason to watch this period for clues about the coming Saturn/Pluto cycle that begins on January 12th.

While there could be some very tense times in the collective with Mars in Scorpio, each sign (ascendant as well as Sun sign) will have an opportunity to use this energy constructively in their personal lives.

Scorpios will naturally get the greatest boost, especially around mid-to-late December. The extra energy of Mars in their sign will invigorate every aspect of life, and there could be some surprises in the area of relationships. Cancer and Pisces also have some very constructive connections to Mars in Scorpio. Crabs can emphasize creativity, while fish may get the most out of study and exploration.

Taurus will have a bit of a challenge with Mars opposite, although relationship matters that have been stuck are likely to get moving during this period. Early December is a good time to be active, with mid-December likely to bring decisive answers to any partnership question that’s been lingering.

Leos will find that this placement of Mars emphasizes home and family matters. It could be time to take on a house project, or maybe lions will be extra active during the holiday season. Aquarians can finish strong in the area of career, bringing a little extra energy to the end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020.

Libra will benefit from placing an emphasis on finances: both bringing in more income and exercising some restraint in expenditures. Aries will also have opportunities in financial matters, and paying down debt is a good option. This placement of Mars can also be very helpful for rams that are interested in taking on ‘good debt’ such as a mortgage – but caveat emptor.

Gemini feels Mars in Scorpio somewhat obliquely, but it would be wise to start a diet or exercise program, or generally work on building up your health and wellbeing. That may be needed, as work could be quite busy, too. Virgo can attend to research and studying, digging deep into the details. Pick a project and get to it!

Capricorns are busy enough during this period of time, with Saturn and Pluto about to meet, Jupiter entering their sign on December 2nd, and Venus climbing her way through from November 25th. Mars in Scorpio should help with social networking and connecting with friends during the holiday season, and will generally be supportive of mountain goats.

Sagittarius… Ah, Sag… Your ruler is leaving his home and yours for another eleven-year trip around the zodiac. And to make matters even more serious, he enters Capricorn, where his natural expansiveness (and yours) is hampered by a need to work and earn rewards. Mars in Scorpio won’t be affecting you all that directly, although some of you may find that unexpected help or hindrances shape these six weeks. Mars in your twelfth house can signal the helpful daimon or destructive demon – maintain your awareness and compassion, and fuel your inner optimism to help you make the best choices.
