Jovial Houseguest: Mars in Scorpio

9 December 2017 – 26 January 2018

Mars returns to his second home on 9 December, and finds his friend Jupiter in the house. Last time Mars was in Scorpio, in early 2016, he had the place to himself – no doubt a relief after hosting Saturn for a couple of years earlier in the decade. Mars may have limited tolerance for Jupiter’s upbeat and outgoing attitude, but in the sign of the scorpion even Jupiter is inclined to tone it down a bit and focus on serious matters.

In Scorpio, Mars plays defense. Rather than asserting himself to move forward, he keeps the home fires burning and guards the castle walls. Mars in Scorpio protects the clan – but mostly himself. We’ll find that we’re feeling a bit more security-oriented and cautious as 2017 turns into 2018.

Mars’ only makes a few aspects during his stay, but he’ll be busy nonetheless. Pay particular attention to the times when the Moon is in Scorpio, 13 – 15 December and 9 – 11 January. During these times we’re most likely to feel protective, and perhaps even reactive, energy of Mars most powerfully.

An easy trine between Mars and Neptune on the 28th of December can push us into action. Mars/Neptune aspects can either goad us to go to extremes or to lose energy – or both, as it’s a kind of burnout aspect. Yet with Mars in cautious Scorpio, we’re unlikely to push things too far. Measured responses to perceived threats are okay, but don’t go overboard.

Mars meets with Jupiter on the 6th of January. Right around this time we may see some of the more prominent manifestations of Jupiter’s time in Scorpio. The wave of sexual abuse stories may reach a kind of crescendo, for example. Other Scorpionic news stories include power plays of all kinds, including threats of nuclear action from North Korea and Russian/American subterfuge. With Mars square to Ceres in Leo just a day before (5th Jan), there could be considerable tensions on a global level as egos get out of hand. On a more personal level, this could be the time when we feel drawn to act on feelings that have been building up within.

The Sun, Venus, and Pluto all meet up in Capricorn on January 9th, and wave hello to Mars in Scorpio at the same time via an easy (or is it uneasy?) sextile. The blending of these energies is likely to send significant shockwaves through our personal relationships. There could be a feeling of inevitability in many of the changes that happen around this time. Many of us will feel the need to go deep in our partnerships, or to leave entirely.

This isn’t a bargaining period or even decision-making time: it’s a transition point that releases potential that have been coming for a long time. As we’re approaching the new moon, it may feel more like a time of ending than beginnings, and it could be helpful to remember that we need to release the past in order to move into the future. Still, that’s often easier said than done, and Mars in Scorpio could be urging us to hold on just a little longer.

The last major aspect Mars makes in Scorpio is a trine to Chiron in Pisces on the 18th. This suggests healing potential, although Mars implies a kind of emotional surgery – perhaps to open and clean a wound that has healed over but still is inflamed or infected. Ultimately restoring health and balance sometimes requires that things get messy for a bit. We’re likely to be working with issues that were on our minds and in our hearts around January 9th.

Scorpios will feel the energy of Mars in their sign most directly, and the other Water signs – Cancer and Pisces – should be able to take advantage of the extra energy imparted by the Cosmic Warrior. The Fire signs – Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius – might feel the Scorpionic vibe to be somewhat challenging. It’s not that the energy is necessarily bad for Fire signs, but it may be harder to see exactly where the powerful energy is coming from and where to use it. Leos may have the easiest time, focusing on home and family.

Air Signs – Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius – are also likely to feel a bit awkward with the strong energy coming from Scorpio, although Libra can use it to focus on finances. The three Earth signs of Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn should be able to have a handle on this volatile cosmic conduit, Taurus mostly in the area of personal and business relationships – bulls may find that they have a partner or opponent that’s nearly as determined as they are.

I’ve got both Jupiter and Mars in scorpio (Sep. 1982), and I found that i could easily relate to the article, also it was written in a short and concise manner, without leaving out the small details…
