Believe It Or Not: Mars in Sagittarius
2 August – 27 September, 2016
By Agent 17, Armand Diaz
Having turned direct on June 29th after ten weeks of retrograding, Mars re-enters Sagittarius on 2 August. In the sign of the archer, Mars is ready to fight for truth and justice – variously defined according to your social, political, philosophical, or religious address. Mars can certainly bring out the more polarized side of Sagittarius, a sign that can be flexible as it searches for truth but somewhat dogmatic when it believes it’s found it. Expect Mars to turn up the heat on social and political debates – although the temperature is already pretty hot in most quarters. Issues about Sagittarian topics such as international relations and foreigners are likely to be especially contentious, all the more so because Mars will add heat to Saturn’s focus on them.
Mars begins his stay by ruffling some feathers, as he squares an opposition of Venus and Pallas Athene on the 6th of August. We may see prominent females in the news, and questions may emerge about whether they are hewing to party lines. With Mercury squaring Saturn on the same day, there could be battles between data and beliefs, as facts are reinterpreted (and maybe misinterpreted) to fit pre-existing conclusions. Relationships will also be under a bit of stress, perhaps because the way things are doesn’t match our image of how they should be.
Saturn stations on 13 August, ending his retrograde period for 2016. This station is just about a degree away from the point where Mars stationed to retrograde in mid-April, and we may begin to see issues from that time re-emerging. The review of matters that were prominent in the first half of 2016 should continue through the 24th, as Mars leaves the shadow of his retrograde and then meets with Saturn. Final decisions on issues that have been lingering unresolved could finally take place around the middle of August, and watch for a decisive conclusion where there was wavering until recently.
On 25 August, Mars squares the degree of the September 1st solar eclipse, perhaps acting as a trigger for the energy of that powerful new moon. Keep an eye on the events of the day, in the collective and also in your personal life. Eclipses often ‘cast their shadows before them’ and this may be an excellent example of that phenomenon.
In mid-September, things really begin to heat up, as Mars tangles with the sun and retrograde Mercury on the 12th and 13th. Mars in Sagittarius may be more interested in promoting the party line than listening to the facts, but the sun and Mercury will be asking us to look at the data and review our conclusions. With the north node in Virgo, an objective assessment is likely to win out, although not without a fight.
Wounds may be opened as Mars squares Chiron on the 15th of September, just a day before a lunar eclipse. This aspect could bring up pains that we thought were in the past, picking at a scab that we were going to let heal over. In the light of the full moon, it can be hard to maintain perspective, but Chiron reminds us to be compassionate, even if we have to say or do something painful.
A day after the lunar eclipse, Mars and Uranus connect via an easy trine. Riled up by the energy of the full moon, we’re ready to move ahead at top speed. Individuals work for the greater good and everyone can contribute in their own way. As always, whether that means constructive or destructive action is a matter of choice, and to a degree a matter of how you look at it. Still, it’s a good time to infuse passion into anything you do – the cosmos has the wind at your back.
A more flowing energy prevails on 19 September, as Mars and Venus ease themselves into a sextile. The Goddess of Love will be in her home sign of Libra, where graciousness and manners prevail. This energy should help us to express not only our wants and needs, but our ideas about relationship and how we would like it to operate. It’s a good vibe for connecting with someone new, or deepening a connection with your partner.
Fire Signs, Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius, will get a boost of energy from Mars’ stay in one of their signs. Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces) may find the energy a bit harder to handle, although Scorpio can work productively, especially if the focus is on finance. Air signs (Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius) will be challenged by Mars in Sagittarius, but will be energized by the Warrior in this part of the zodiac. Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn) may have the toughest time integrating the Sagittarian feel, as actions become quite theoretically based and long-range plans take precedence over more immediate concerns.
Mars’ trip through Sagittarius is certain to be charged, polarizing, and exciting. Most of all, we’re likely to feel that 2016 is finally moving forward at a good pace – although we may soon feel it is moving too fast!
