Talking Points: Mars in Gemini (21 April to 4 June, 2017)

On 21st April, Mars begins six weeks in Gemini, where he encourages us to assert ourselves verbally. Barbed words and clever turns of phrase are common when the Cosmic Warrior is in Gemini, a placement that calls to mind courtroom drama, acerbic standup comedy, and biting satire. Fiery political rhetoric is likely – and in the sign of the twins Mars doesn’t mind amplifying both sides of a debate.

Yet Mars in Gemini isn’t only verbal. Mars is the planet of action, and he moves quickly in Mercury’s sign (although perhaps a bit less quickly for a while, given that Mercury is retrograde until 3rd May). We’re likely to see many people are ready to fly off the handle at a moment’s notice, perhaps because of an ill-placed word.

Sexually, Mars in Gemini has a flexible quality that’s ready to bend both rules and limbs as he experiments with different possibilities. On the other hand, in this sign Mars can sometimes be satisfied by an interesting idea, without the need to act on it.

Mars moves into Gemini just as Pluto has stationed to retrograde, Mercury is retrograding from Taurus to Aries while the Sun is changing signs in the other direction, and Venus is square to Saturn. The several days around the 21st of April are likely to be quite charged, and Mars’ move into mutable Gemini is likely to stir up the sense of uncertainty around this time.

Uncertainty is also a keyword for Mars’ next move, a square to Neptune on the 11th of May. This aspect can have us acting on impulse, going off on crusades and tirades, or tilting at windmills. While a loss of moderation is very typical, these planets in these signs can have us either overexcited or feeling weak and disempowered – the energies will hit us each in their own way.

A more productive vibe takes hold just a day later, as Mars weighs in on an Jupiter/Pallas opposition. Around this time we’re likely to be inclined to speak the truth as we see it, with less concern for diplomacy and manners than usual. Yet even Mars doesn’t encourage us to be brash so much as to see both sides of an issue and then move forward as we think necessary.

An edgy quincunx between Mars and Juno on the 17th may pit the need for freedom and experimentation against more traditional relationship structures. With Juno in conservative Capricorn, the tensions could be significant, but the quincunx is an aspect that often plays out subtly, in the background.

Not so Mars’ opposition to Saturn on 28th May. Here, Mars is likely to hurl facts at beliefs – like a tenacious investigative reported disclosing what he’s found. With Mars going on to sextile Uranus two days later, the prognosis is good that the truth will out this time around.

A different mood reigns on the 2nd of June, when Mars squares Chiron in Pisces. Mars may rip the scabs off old wounds (and new), perhaps with a sharp or even hurtful comment. While there is potential for some pain, this is also an opportunity to let go of emotional baggage.

For this go-round of Mars in Gemini, Aries (Sun sign and ascendant) is likely to feel energized, but there may also be a tendency to be ‘of two minds’ about things, and the drive of Aries could be somewhat dissipated by second-guessing itself. With the Sun in Taurus for much of the time, the sign of the bull will be energized about life in general, with a particular focus on finances likely. Gemini will get the benefit of Martial power for use as it sees fit. Cancer may have a more difficult time managing the charged energy that is operating just out of its line of site – be aware of irritants that have no obvious cause.

Leo can further long-term goals, and also do some productive networking, while neighbor Virgo focuses on career (it’s a great time for presentations and other public appearances for both signs). Libra may get the travel bug or become a bit philosophical with this placement of Mars – the sign of the scales can certainly relate to the divided attention of Mars in Gemini. Scorpios may have some difficulty, as their ruler Mars seems too playful and careless for their cautious attitude that prefers depth of experience over variety.

Sagittarius may find the focus is on partnership – or partners becoming opponents. It’s a good time for those in the sign of the archer to take stock of their partners as dynamic, sexual beings. Capricorn may have mixed feelings about it, but this placement of Mars suggests work, which is rarely a problem for mountain goats. Aquarius can take advantage for creative purposes, ultimately enjoying the playful nature of Mars in Gemini. Pisces may be focused on home, feeling more energized to take on projects and connect with family members.
