Mars makes a quick trip through Aquarius this November and December, spending not quite six weeks in the sign we associate with rationality, freedom, and our highest goals. In the sign of the Water Bearer, Mars is ready to take up the sword to fight for or defend ideals – but not necessarily your ideals. Mars can be a warrior for any side of an issue, and the Aquarian energy can manifest at extremes of the right or left.
Significantly, Mars will aspect all four asteroid goddesses (although Ceres is now a ‘dwarf planet’) during his stay in Aquarius, emphasizing the role of the feminine in the collective consciousness. He starts off with an easy sextile to partnership goddess Juno on November 11th, expanding our sense of possibility in realm of relationships. It could be time to step back and consider what we really want and need in this area of life, keeping an open mind and challenging our assumptions.
A few days later, on the 15th, Mars opposes Vesta in Leo. Vesta is often associated with Virgo and purity of purpose, but there is also a sexual dynamic to this asteroid. Mercury and Venus are also in the mix, aspecting both Vesta and Mars. With Venus at an awkward semisextile in Capricorn, it could be that traditional relationship values are challenged by more progressive attitudes towards sexuality. Mercury suggests shuttling between competing perspectives, opening up lines of communication not only with others, but also within ourselves.
Later in his stay in Aquarius, on December 7th, Mars sextiles Ceres in Aries. This may be a time when we focus on health and wellness, particularly our food supply and how it is affected by technology. Ceres is especially powerful at this time, stationing to go direct just two days later.
Finally, on December 14th, just a few days before he leaves the sign, Mars meets up with the sword-wielding goddess of wisdom Pallas Athene, who is also in Aquarius. This may be a time when a prominent woman ‘speaks the truth’. Look to see whether Mars and Pallas join forces or tangle in a sword fight (or both).
While these aspects to the goddesses will play out to an extent in our personal lives, pay attention to how they manifest in the collective. Especially with Mars in collectively-oriented Aquarius, we’re likely to see shifts beyond the personal.
Other than his connections with the goddesses, Mars makes only a few aspects. From December 1st through the 3rd, he parleys with Jupiter and Saturn via a trine and a sextile. These aspects should offer an opportunity to coordinate between more traditional and progressive viewpoints, especially with Jupiter playing the diplomat in Libra. Yet on the 6th Mars sextiles the ruler of Aquarius, Uranus, who’s out in Mars’ home sign of Aries. This aspect may push some of us to be more uncompromisingly individualistic, while others may enthusiastically hew to party lines. Extreme groups at either end of the spectrum (or any of the many sides of an issue) could also see an opportunity to make their case, or act out.
As Mars leaves Aquarius for Pisces on December 19th, the clarity we’ve had – or thought we had – begins to fade. Not only does the Cosmic Warrior dive into the foggy mists of Neptune’s sign, but Mercury stations to go retrograde.
The fixed signs, Aquarius, Taurus, Leo, and Scorpio, are likely to feel the effects of Mars in Aquarius most directly. Leo may have to deal with partnership issues, while Taurus handles career challenges and Scorpio deals with home and family. Aquarians will have the martial energy coursing through every aspect of life.
Aries may have to wait longer than they’d like, although the opportunities for action will be there. Cancer might have some difficulty with this energy – the emotional crab could feel put off by the detached Aquarian vibe. Aquarian big-picture perspective sometimes chafes against detail-oriented Virgo, who would like some facts to support action. Libra and Gemini should really benefit, with a creative energy infusing many activities. Capricorn is likely to be focused on finances. Sagittarius will enjoy the shift between beliefs and ideals. Pisces feels the energy but may have less awareness of where it is coming from and how it will manifest.
