Something to Talk About: Mars in Gemini, 31 March – 15 May, 2019

The Cosmic Warrior enters the sign of the twins on the last day of March this year, beginning a six-week stay that will have us expressing and asserting ourselves verbally. Words can get hot with Mars in Gemini, and there can be a tendency to speak before thinking – especially if we believe we have really good point.

With the lineup of planets in Capricorn and Aries over this period of time, it might seem that Mars is going to miss the action, but in fact he’s going to be quite busy. In April, Ceres, Jupiter, Pluto, and Saturn all station to retrograde, and Mars will be aspecting them all.

The first aspect Mars makes is a sextile to Chiron, who’s in Mars’ home sign of Aries on April 3rd. A soft but helpful aspect, we may be able to work on our self-confidence, which might be flagging with Chiron in the sign of the ram. Expressing doubts about ourselves is one way to work this energy, but it could be better to engage in a little verbal assertiveness.

Earth Day is likely to be especially charged this year, as Mars opposes Ceres on the 21st of April. We’re coming to discover that Ceres means more than simply Earth Mother, and that she’s quite a force to be reckoned with (as one astrologer put it recently, she’s Pluto’s mother in law, after all). A combination of Mars and Ceres could mean that things get quite hot as we discuss global warming, and this year’s Earth Day looks to be more about protests than celebration. With Mars trine to Pallas Athene just two days later, we could see that women are taking the lead, offering uncompromising, if inconvenient, truths.

Mercury, Jupiter, and Mars form an easy series of aspects from May 1st through the 5th, right around the new moon in Taurus. This period offers a reduction in tension and an ability to communicate openly. Somewhat diplomatic in nature, the beginning of May offers some opportunities to reduce tensions in personal and collective matters.

Venus and Mars form an easy sextile on May 14th. The day or two approaching this connection should be very fertile for romance. That’s especially true as both planets are at the end of their signs, and Venus in Aries is in reception to Mars. It’s a time when we can take relationships to the next level, or maybe get a potential connection off the ground.

Folks with ascendant or Sun in Gemini will feel the energy of Mars most directly, of course. Mars in their sign will energize just about every area of life. The other Air signs, Libra and Aquarius, will also benefit from this placement. Libras may be considering travel or new education opportunities, while Aquarius can really use Mars in Gemini to get creative projects moving.

Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) can use the Mars-in-Gemini energy like a battery, to be plugged into almost any project. Aries can apply it to just about anything, while Leo may find that social and professional networking opportunities can be seized. Sagittarius is likely to find that partnership – and perhaps partners – get quite hot.

Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) may find that Mars in Gemini offers more questions than answers, as this energy hits them more obliquely. Cancer could feel some disturbances from unknown sources – although unseen and unasked for help is also a possibility. Scorpio may have to deal with some issues around insurance, taxes, and other heavy issues (fortunately, this isn’t such a problem for scorpions). Pisces may have home and family matters to contend with – it could be a good time to consider making renovations or other changes to one’s domicile.

Earth signs also have adjustments to make with Mars in the sign of the twins. Taurus may be focused on finances, and can use the Martial energy to make some money. Virgo and Capricorn may find that work and career become something of a challenge, perhaps because there’s too much to do. Both signs can handle work challenges handily enough if they can maintain focus, but neither likes to multitask – which is just what might be demanded at this time.
