Aggressively Passive: Mars in Libra 12 November 2015 – 3 January 2016
by Agent 17 – Armand Diaz
“Pardon, but if it’s not too much of an inconvenience, do you think I might trouble you for some of those grenades?”
Mars enters Libra for a six week stay beginning on 12 November. In the sign of the Goddess of Love, Mars is often considered to be in debility, or weak. Yet it’s not love that trips up the Cosmic Warrior in Libra, but the rules. Rules of propriety, rules of engagement, rules of conduct. Manners. For Pete’s sake, manners. Mars is independent and impulsive, not given to following rules or minding his manners. The result can be that our assertiveness gets subverted, coming out in passive-aggressive ways.
In Libra, Mars is more likely to dash off a terse memo than to throw a punch, and we may be thankful for that. Yet we may also feel that people are being less than genuine, smiling through clenched teeth, offering back-handed compliments, and using formalities to manipulate. Mars in Libra can recall the clerk at the motor vehicle department who tells us, “sorry, there’s nothing I can do, it’s policy.” With Jupiter in particularistic Virgo this year, we may find that mountains of paperwork await us after we climb through the foothills of forms.
Yet there’s a positive side to Mars in Libra, and it’s the ability to see the other’s perspective in the midst of action. Mars in Libra can help us to forestall turning an opponent into an enemy, although he can also help us to see our opponent’s strategy. There are at least two sides to every story, and while seeing the opposing viewpoint may slow down our ability to act, it can also temper our inclination to react.
In returning to Libra, Mars is revisiting the sign of his 2014 retrograde. He spent about eight months in Libra, from December 2013 through July of 2014, an extended stay in the sign of the scales that colored the peak of the Uranus-Pluto square. It seemed at the time that Mars cooled that hot aspect somewhat, although as he moved forward into Scorpio things began to heat up. As he passes through the sign again, issues that were prominent in the fist half of 2014 may re-emerge.
On November 24th, Mars insinuates himself into the Saturn/Neptune square that is exact two days later. With Mars playing passive-aggressive in Libra and in an awkward quincunx to Neptune, it could be hard to know what’s going on, but it won’t be difficult to know that something is happening. Deals may be made behind the scenes or out of sight, and what seemed like firm ground may give way.
A trine to Ceres in Aquarius on the 25th may get lost in the shuffle of the week’s Neptunian activity, but we could see a prominent message about the environment or public health in the news. Truth may be the issue as Mars squares Pallas Athene in Pisces on the 30th. Look for arm-wrestling about who’s actually offering the real story.
Perhaps the tensest moment of Mars’ stay in Libra may come as he squares Pluto on the 6th of December. Power brokers of all stripes may be bargaining hard, and perhaps using rules to skirt responsibility. On the other hand, legal entanglements could limit the reach of Plutocrats, at least temporarily.
Four days later, on the 10th, Mars opposes Uranus. While this aspect is potentially explosive, we may feel it is liberating after the tension of the previous few days. A breaking point can also be a release point, and Uranus in Mars’ home sign of Aries may remind the warrior that he needn’t be following all the rules.
Mercury squares Mars on 29 December, and again truth may be the issue. Belief systems may contrast with facts, or political polemics could stretch the limits of decorum. Mud-slinging would probably be done with some restraint, but fueled by true believers, mud will probably be slung.
The individual signs – sun, moon, and ascendant – will each feel the energy of Mars in Libra differently. Libra gets the most direct push, and that push may well be out of the usual comfort zone for the sign of the scales. Things could get a little messy, and, worst of all, people might see!
Scorpio feels the energy on its way, but not quite there yet. There could be a bit of impatience from an unknown source, or an uneasy feeling that’s hard to pin down. Sagittarius will be energized in the areas of friends and networking. Capricorns will be dealing with career issues: an annoying situation or person may be providing motivation, so seagoats shouldn’t necessarily walk away from a confrontation. Play by the rules, but play the game.
Aquarius will feel the energy of Mars in Libra in a generally supportive way. Travel and education will be possible areas that Mars will help to move forward. If water bearers are considering taking a course, sticking to something traditional could be a good idea.
Pisces may have some stresses with Mars in Libra, and those stresses may be somewhat vague. Care, not to say caution, with loans, taxes, and other matters might be smart for people with significant placements in the sign of the fish.
Aries will feel the energy most directly through relationship. It could be that partners are sending a message, but that message could be less direct than rams would like. Taurus might find that work becomes energized, offering opportunities and/or stress.
Gemini can find that creativity takes off with Mars in Libra. Following traditional rules, coloring within the lines, is probably a better approach than freeform artistic projects.
Cancer may feel some stress with – gulp! – home and family. Dealing with issues as directly as possible is a good idea, although it may not always be possible. Paperwork could be part of the picture, and there could be a lot of it. Leos will be energized around the areas of transportation, communication, and everyday routines. It may not sound like much, but it may be an opportunity for lions to start work on a book. Virgo may be focused on finances, and motivated to make changes. In general, sticking to tried-and-true methods of making (and keeping) money could be better than new schemes.
Mars in Libra will be a dynamic energy, at both the individual and collective levels. Pay attention to major events and see if they resonate with early 2014 in some way. With our never-ceasing flow of news it can be challenging to follow stories for very long, but personal issues from that time may come up.Agent 17 – Armand Diaz, Ph.D. Armand’s approach to astrology is informed by his extensive work in the evolution of consciousness and a broad knowledge of ancient and modern spiritual traditions.
